Daily Fun Fact

It takes up to 1000 years for a stalactite to grow 1/2 inch.

How big is the Universe ?

It is difficult to say how big the universe is because no one really knows how large the universe truly is. The distance light travels in a year is called a "light year," and is about six trillion miles. If we could travel at the speed of light which is the fastest speed possible, it would take over 4 years to reach the nearest star. Even the most advanced instruments, which allow astronomers to observe galaxies 12 billion light years away, give no clue to what lies beyond the distance light could have traveled since the birth of the universe, about 14 billion years ago.

Did you know?

Proxima Centauri is the nearest star to us and is 4.2 light years away.

A person who looks directly at the sun with binoculars or a telescope can be blinded for life.
