Humans are thought to have first evolved in Africa because the oldest bones and remains of human creatures have been discovered there.

Asia is the biggest continent with an area of 17 million square miles. Asia has more people than any other continent in the world, with a population of 3.5 billion. Asia is located in the Eastern and Northern Hemispheres. In the northernmost part of Asia there are very cold winters, while in the southermost parts are hot tropical areas by the Equator.

Africa is the second largest continent in the world and has 53 countries. Africa has the world's longest river (The Nile) and world's largest desert (The Sahara). The population of Asia ranks third, behind Asia and Europe. In Africa there are more than 800 ethnic groups.

North America is the third biggest continent by land area and includes Canada, Greenland, the United States, Mexico, Central America and the island of the Caribbean Sea.

South America is the fourth largest continent. It has 12 countries and 3 major territories. South America has the world's largest river system (The Amazon).

Antarctica is the fifth largest of the seven continents. It is considered to be both an island and a continent. It is divided into East Antarctica and West Antarctica by the Transarctic Mountains. It is the highest and lowest continent. Antarctica is the only continent where no civilization has ever been established. Therefore it does not have any native inhabitants, nor any large land animals. The population of Antarctica includes seasonal and year-round staffed research stations, which means that there are approximately 4,000 people in the summer and 1,000 in the winter. The continent of Antarctica is the coldest region on the Earth. Ninty-nine percent of Antarctica lies permanently under ice.

Europe is the sixth largest of the continents. Europe has about 3,800 square miles. There are about 700 million people, or one seventh of the world's population that live in the 49 countries that make up the continent of Europe and there are 50 different languages spoken there.

AUSTRALIA is the smallest of the seven continents. Austrailia has about 3,300 square miles.

The largest city in North America is Mexico City which has over 16.5 million people.

The largest city in the United States is New York City which has a population of 16 million.

Istanbul is a city that is situated on two continents. It lies both in Europe and Asia.

The national bird of the United States is the bald eagle.

South America has the world's biggest rain forest.

The amazon in South America holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water.

The world's longest mountains are the Andres which stretch more than 4,340 miles in South America.

The worlds highest waterfall is called Angel Falls and is located in southeast Venezuela.

One-eighth of the world's population live in Europe.

In New Zealand, there are more sheep than people!
