What is the Ozone Layer ?

The ozone (also known as ozonosphere) is a layer in the atmosphere that is a form of oxygen. Ozone is created when oxygen reacts under the influence of sunlight. The ozone layer is invisible and filters out harmful ultraviolet rays from the Sun. The ozone layer is in the stratosphere which reaches 30 miles above the Earth. Scientists have discovered holes in the ozone layer high above the Earth, which they believe is caused by harmful gases given off by aerosol sprays ( like hairspray and deodorants) and factories . Ozone is a bluish gas that is formed by three atoms of oxygen.

Production of the industrial chemicals which once posed a major threat to the ozone layer has been greatly reduced, and levels of some of these chemicals are now beginning to decline in the lower atmosphere.

In 1985, scientists identified a thinning of the ozone layer over the Antarctic during the spring months which became known as the "ozone hole".
